Traveler Whiskey

A collaboration between Buffalo Trace distilleryโ€™s master distiller Harlen Wheatley and Grammy winning singer, songwriter and musician Chris Stapleton. This is a blended whiskey of which the blend is unknown. That being said, Harlen does a good job of mixing what’s in here together. The nose is very light and sweet. The palate matches this, with a very smooth mouth feel. Flavors of maple, oak, sweet corn and caramel are pleasant (almost too sweet?). There’s the faintest bit of spice on the finish and then it’s gone. There’s nothing unique or “special” here. Diehard bourbon drinkers/Buffalo Trace advocates will be off-put by this whiskey, but at this price point (~$35 a bottle) it’s difficult not to recommend this to someone looking for something new to try.

Pros

+ Inexpensive

+ Great mixing whiskey

+ Sweet tooth’s will love it

Cons

– Unremarkable

– What’s in this bottle?

– May be too sweet for some

Henry McKenna: 10 Year Single Barrel Bottled in Bond

Henry McKenna is a readily available bourbon found on most shelves in your local liquor store. This, however is their version that has been aged for 10 years and is bottled in bond, meaning it adheres to certain guidelines passed by congress in 1897 (must be aged at least 4 years, must be 100 proof, must be bottled in a bonded warehouse, etc.). On the nose, there are notes of oak, caramel and vanilla. Essentially what you want in a bourbon. The taste is warm and spicy. Those caramel and vanilla scents are there as flavors, but there’s a strong taste of honey and fruit (apple?). The finish is long and lingers. At $55 for the bottle, this is really a lovely bottle of bourbon and one that I’ll be keeping on my personal bar shelf.

Pros

+ Wonderful flavor

+ Great value

+ Available

Cons

– There’s an end to the bottle
