an improved cucumber
A few hundred years ago, someone realized that taking a cucumber and soaking it in brine made it awesome
Whether they be garlicy, spicy, sour, or whatever, pickles are generally awesome. Unfortunately, some aren’t so great. Read on to know which ones are better than others.
Grillos Pickles
Pickles so good that other companies are being sued for copying their recipe (seriously, look it up). This 100 year old family recipe is worthy of stealing, because it’s fantastic! The ingredients are the same as other pickles (cucumbers, brine, garlic, dill, etc.) but they play so much better together here. Grillos makes a classic dill in all the usual shapes (spears, halves, wholes, chips) and the fresh, dill flavor and crunch of the pickle are just great. There’s a bit of garlic without being overpowering. These are the pickles I now judge all other pickles against. Their hot recipe is fantastic as well. It’s got a little bit of spice without being too much heat. If you want the extra heat however, they make a blazing hot recipe that will satisfy your taste buds. Seriously, try these if you haven’t already. They don’t disappoint.
Pros
+ Delicious
+ Fresh
+ Available in every size and in spicy form if desired
Cons
– A little more expensive than your standard grocery store pickle
Randy’s Artisanal
Randy’s makes some very unique pickles for people that want more than just a Vlassic. There’s all the standard that you’d expect and they’re good. A little pricey and I don’t like that they aren’t refrigerated prior to buying. I feel like that allows the pickles to get soggy faster than they would if they were consistently chilled. I was at the store recently and saw a jar of their Grilled OG (Original Garlic) pickles. Dude. Grilled pickles. These have to be good, right? Well, yes and no. The grilling lends a smoke flavor to the pickle which is nice when paired with the garlic. The problem I experienced was that with these being halves, they had gotten soggy and it really affected the pickle. Not having that crunch made the texture a little off. Then the garlic with this being a half became a little overwhelming. I don’t think the garlic would have been an issue had the pickle been crunchy. For $12, I feel like these were a little too expensive and not as good as I’d hoped.
Pros
+ Good flavor
+ Unique
Cons
– Expensive
– Tends to get soggy
